From points to a continuous surface
A continuous line of light is an experience of the complete detail. The source, optical material, mounting position and surrounding finishes all contribute to what a person sees. A product photograph is a useful starting point; a representative sample connects that image to the actual space.
Begin by describing the intended result. Should a visible luminous surface appear even from nearby, or should a concealed source illuminate a wall? These are different viewing conditions and deserve different sample arrangements.
Evaluate the complete section
Show the source position, available optical depth, emitting face and adjacent materials in one section. Ask how the selected configuration manages the relationship between individual emitters and the finished visible surface. Compare the complete assembly rather than an exposed light source alone.
Include an end and a junction in the sample. A long straight section can look convincing while a termination, corner or change of material interrupts the visual rhythm. Decide which breaks are intentional and which require further coordination.
Use the real viewpoints
Observe the sample from the approach, from nearby and from the positions where people will pause. Include seated views when the line belongs to a lobby, restaurant or other occupied interior. Move around the detail rather than judging it from one photograph.
Repeat the review with the proposed finish. A polished surface may show reflections that are absent from a matte sample board. Record whether the desired subject is the light line itself, the illuminated material or the transition between them.
Read colour as well as continuity
Colour temperature describes an aspect of the light's appearance; colour rendering concerns how objects appear under it. The DOE discusses these as distinct qualities. Record both the selected colour appearance and the colour information available for the exact product.
Compare samples on the actual materials and at the intended operating levels. Keep the product configuration and control setting with each observation, so the preferred effect can be specified and reproduced.
A useful sample record
A compact record makes the next conversation more precise. Connect each observation to a drawing revision and an identifiable product configuration.
- Emitting face, profile dimensions and proposed mounting position.
- Viewing positions and the finishes used for the review.
- Colour, operating level and control combination tested.
- Photographs of the straight section, junction and termination.
- Accepted details and the questions still requiring confirmation.
