Flexibility has a direction
Choose the bend direction by drawing the path and the emitting face together. Check the required radius against the specification for the selected product. A ceiling reveal, a vertical arch and a rounded facade can each orient the light differently.
Share the plan, elevation and section with the designer, supplier and installer so everyone can review the same geometry and mounting detail.
Mark the emitting face
Draw an arrow or a shaded face on the plan and section. Keep that convention consistent through every turn. Describe whether light should face the viewer, illuminate another surface or remain concealed within a recess.
At a change of plane, show a second section. A single centreline can hide a transition where rotation has been assumed. Identify whether that transition can be achieved by the selected configuration or needs a separate detail.
Confirm the exact configuration
Use the manufacturer's information for the selected product to confirm permitted bending direction, minimum radius and handling requirements. These belong to a specific configuration; a similar appearance or profile name is insufficient evidence of identical behaviour.
Bring the actual required radius into the selection discussion. If the proposed geometry cannot be confirmed, revisit the detail while there is still room to adjust the route, introduce a planned junction or choose another configuration.
Coordinate mounting and connections
Show where supports begin and end, how the line will be retained and how connection points can be reached. A finished curve includes its mounting, cable exits and transitions to adjacent lengths.
Keep installation access in the drawing. An attractive recess can become difficult to assemble if the mounting sequence or cable route has not been considered. Ask the project team to review a representative transition before repeating it throughout the design.
What to bring to a sample review
A physical sample is most useful when it tests a defined question. Agree what the review must establish and keep that record with the selected configuration.
- Plan, elevation and a section showing the emitting face.
- Required radius and each change of plane.
- Mounting, connection and access positions.
- Product-specific bending and handling documentation.
- A sample containing the most demanding transition.
